Why Made-to-Order Promotes Sustainability

The definition of a made-to-order business model means that manufacturing of the product only begins once the order is made. What we have seen in recent years is the mass production of garments, jewelry, and other products that are made without the guarantee of them selling out. Surplus in stock ends up in landfills when sales don't finish the job of selling them for retailers afterwards.

Before our current world of fast fashion, orders for garments and gowns were originally always made per order as ateliers across Europe opened for business and took clients in one by one, fitting them and designing their garments just for them. In other industries goods were typically made in at a minimal size stock to fill a shop or made-to-order as well. However, with the boom of industrialization and rise in spending for products by consumers, companies began to mass produce their items for sale.

A made-to-order business model allows less surplus in stock and reduces waste as each order is only done for a demand that immediately exists and will be fulfilled. An advantage of this business model is a higher focus on quality control, as mass produced items are more difficult to quality check individually.

Adapting to the needs of the planet will be a growing value amongst businesses as consumers begin to shop more ethically and sustainably across all industries. Made-to-order provides businesses with a model that is sustainable for the earth as well as allows them to save by not spending money on stock that will not sell with guarantee.
